ABOUT THE PROJECT

With this commission, we were given the liberty to explore new means of unpacking a hong bao (red packet). Among the few ideas we drafted, the cherry blossom concept resonated the most with what we wanted to achieve with this project.
We wanted the cherry blossom hong bao to be more than just a money envelope. We want to provide a narrative experience for the recipient.
The pulling mechanism of the hong bao animates a “blooming” cherry blossom tree as the insert is being pulled out. This represents the promise of spring and a renewal of life that comes with a new year.
The illustration on the hong bao tells a story of how people were awarded an abundance in harvest for their caring and nurturing of the tree – a visual representation of the Chinese phrase “五谷丰登” (wu gu feng deng).
